California has over 5,000 native plant species, more than any other state in the U.S. Thirty-five percent of these plants are endemic, growing only within California. The demands of California’s large human population and economic growth are often at odds with the survival of California’s unique native plants. Urban development, agriculture, logging, mining, pollution, invasive species, climate change, fire and fire suppression, plant collecting, and outdoor recreational activities have all taken their toll on California’s native flora. It is the mission of Sierra Nevada in Bloom to develop products, such as this website and our wildflower playing cards, to increase public awareness and appreciation of California's native plants. With greater awareness, we become better stewards of our planet's grandeur.
